Chair Mat for Laminate Floor, Vinyl Plank and Tile
One smooth back mat covers all three floors, but the caster rules split. Shaw says plastic wheels on laminate, Karndean says never rubber on vinyl.

A hardwood chair mat must be smooth backed. Shaw asks for a 1 inch wide vinyl caster surface, and the NWFA sets no rolling chair rule at all.
The paperclip method takes two minutes. Push a straightened clip to the subfloor, mark the top of the pile, measure, then match the printed rating.
Match the mat to your carpet’s measured pile depth, not to the word plush. Floortex rates polycarbonate to 1/2 inch of pile and PVC to 3/4 inch.
Mat, softer casters, or both? Start with your floor’s own care document. Mohawk requires a chair pad, Karndean says avoid rubber wheels.
Not every floor needs one. The three ways casters mark a floor, the floors where a mat returns nothing, and where the mat itself is the risk.
